Our History

In years past, the building at 209 Elmwood Avenue in Providence, RI was a well-known sporting goods store specializing in scuba-diving equipment.  Several years ago, the building was sold but the new owner’s plan to open a restaurant never happened.  In time, the property became vacant, fell into disrepair and vandalism increased.

Next door at 193 Elmwood Avenue is Elmwood Orthopedic Rehabilitation Center, a well-known physical therapy clinic that serves the Hispanic community and is owned and operated by Igor Yatskar, M.S., P.T. Igor would often ask his patients, what they thought the neighborhood needed.  Many responded by saying that they would like to have a place to go during the day. Thus the idea of an adult day health care center serving the Hispanic community was born.

On March 29, 2010, after extensive renovations, Elmwood Adult Day Health Care Center at 209 Elmwood Ave in Providence opened its doors to welcome participants. After a few years, it was easy to see that a second center was needed. On April 24, 2013 Elmwood Adult Day Health Care Center II at 20 Miner St in Providence opened. Today the Centers are thriving! Participants represent an ever-increasing variety of cultures, backgrounds and health needs.  Here, we are all friends, we care about each other and each person is valued and respected for who they are.  Our success is reflected in the many smiling faces each day.
